The Executive Board
and Board members were chosen by the top Union leaders and elected by the
memberships. Currently all Executive
Board decisions are subject to membership approval by a majority vote of the
membership present at a regular meeting. The top leaders claimed that with the
changes the membership would have the ultimate decision-making power. Their
claim is totally not true. According to the current Bylaw Article III
Section 4, the membership is the supreme governing body whose decisions shall
be final. However, with the proposed changes, the top Union leaders will cut
the elected Executive Board from the democratic decision making process and have
dictatorial control on all aspects of the Union. This will be the end of union
democracy and the voice of rank-and-file members. The
top Union leaders are pushing you to approve the changes because they don’t
believe in democracy. They don’t want to hear from the elected Executive Board
members and they don’t want to hear from you. All they want are absolute control of your Union and your money.
They claim that the changes are “To make sure that all important decisions are
voted on by the membership”, but they always make decisions for the membership
and condemn opposition during meetings. Do you want a handful of their non-elected supporters
showing up in monthly meetings making all decisions for you in the name of
“Membership”? A strong union has to be a democratic union. Our
